Heritage & traditions
The Moken have lived from these seas for generations; the park village explains their traditions.
The Moken village sits on Ao Bon Yai; visit with a guide, dress modestly and ask before photographing.
Protected since 1981; rangers manage the park, its campsites and its rules.
Turtles nest on quiet beaches; some areas close during nesting and hatching.
No-anchor zones and guide-led snorkelling protect the coral; do not touch or stand on it.
Kuraburi’s pier town grew from fishing communities that still work the coast.
Dive boats from Khao Lak and Phuket include Surin and Richelieu Rock on their routes.
Mainland towns near the park serve Andaman seafood and southern curries.
Traditional kabang boats are part of village life; the visitor centre explains their craft.
The Moken’s reading of the sea helped communities reach safety in 2004 — a respected part of the islands’ modern story.
Mu Ko Surin National Park covers Ko Surin Nuea and Ko Surin Tai and their reefs, about 60 km offshore from Kuraburi on the mainland coast.
The park opens roughly mid-October to mid-May; in the monsoon the sea is rough and tours stop. Day trips and pre-booked overnight park stays both run from the mainland.
Do not touch or stand on coral, use reef-safe sunscreen and take rubbish back with you.
The Moken community lives inside the park; support it through guided visits and buy craft where it is offered, rather than entering homes uninvited.
There are no restaurants on the islands: day boats carry food and the park canteen serves overnight guests. Bring water and take all rubbish back to the mainland.
The islands are quiet after dark; overnight visitors camp or stay in park tents on Ko Surin Nuea. Most visitors sleep on the mainland in Khao Lak or Kuraburi.
Park boats and tour speedboats leave Kuraburi Pier, about 1.5 hours offshore; many tours run from Khao Lak with hotel transfers included.
There are no terminals on the islands. For mainland coach connections, Khao Lak is the practical hub, with VIP buses to Bangkok and Phuket.
