Koh Samui has a mountainous green interior surrounded by coastal towns. Chaweng and Lamai lie on the east; Bophut and Mae Nam face north. Ang Thong is an offshore excursion, not part of Samui’s road network.
Gulf weather differs from Phuket’s Andaman coast. Heavy rainfall is common around October to December. Boat trips depend on sea conditions; check forecasts and operator advice.
Fishing communities, coconut farming and Buddhist temples sit alongside international tourism. Fisherman’s Village preserves a waterside trading-town character.
Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes where requested and speak quietly. Ask before photographing people or ceremonies.
Chaweng has the liveliest mix of beach clubs and late-night venues. Bophut and Lamai offer a more relaxed choice of bars and seafront lounges.
Fisherman’s Village is known for waterside restaurants, while local markets and small roadside kitchens offer Thai dishes. Check current market nights rather than assuming a fixed schedule.
Flights arrive at Samui Airport. Mainland ferry routes commonly connect from Donsak; combined bus-and-ferry tickets can simplify travel from Surat Thani. Confirm the island pier and onward transfer.
Samui Airport (USM) is near the northeast coast. Nathon and other piers serve different operators and islands; your ticket determines the departure point.
Taxis, songthaews and pre-booked drivers serve the coastal road. Agree fares before travel; interior waterfall roads can be steep. Do not assume every island road is suitable for a scooter.
