Hua Hin sits on the western shore of the Gulf of Thailand in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The coast faces east, with sandy beaches, rocky headlands and low hills inland. Cha-Am lies to the north; Khao Takiab and Khao Tao lie to the south. Further south still, about an hour's drive, Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park protects a range of limestone peaks rising straight out of the coastal plain — the nearest national park to Hua Hin.
November to February is generally the cooler season. The hotter and wetter months bring changing conditions. Tides can narrow the beach; follow local swimming flags and avoid the sea during storms.
Once a fishing settlement, Hua Hin became a seaside retreat closely associated with Thailand’s royal family and the arrival of the railway. Temple visits, local art and seafood markets remain part of its beach-town rhythm.
Visit Baan Sillapin for art, Cicada for crafts and the central night market for food. Royal heritage does not mean all palaces are open: Klai Kangwon is not a regular public attraction.
Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes where requested and speak quietly. Ask before photographing people or ceremonies.
Hua Hin's nightlife is easy-going rather than loud. Soi Bintabaht, the walking street off Phetkasem Road, gathers open-air bars with live music and pool tables, while beach bars and hotel lounges line the shore. Music generally winds down around midnight, and the scene suits couples and families as much as night owls.
Fresh seafood is the town's signature: grilled fish, prawns and shellfish at casual restaurants along the coast and at Khao Takiab, some with tables right on the sand. The central night market is the best spot for street food, and the Bluport mall adds food-court and international dining with air-conditioning. Book ahead in the November-February high season.
Prices stay reasonable by resort standards, and dress is casual almost everywhere. Check that service charge and VAT are included on the bill, and remember that Thailand's licensing laws limit alcohol sales hours. Bars and restaurants are marked on the map above under City life.
Trains connect Hua Hin with Bangkok and destinations on the southern railway. VIP and long-distance buses use three terminals: the main Hua Hin Bus Station on Phetkasem Road (Soi 96), Sombat Tour's VIP terminal next door and the RRC station near the airport — all marked on the map above under Transport. Allow several hours and confirm current schedules.
Bangkok’s airports are common arrival points for an onward road transfer. A pre-booked car is convenient with luggage or for late arrivals; the VIP coach to Suvarnabhumi departs from the RRC station near the airport. Hua Hin Airport’s services are limited and change; verify flights rather than assuming a route operates.
Walk around the centre and use shared songthaews along main routes. Tuk-tuks, taxis and ride-hailing suit longer journeys. Agree a fare before travel; inland temples and water parks usually need a vehicle. Only ride a motorbike with the correct licence, insurance and helmet.
